Pablo Picasso Large Bird, 1953 A.R. 185 is an enigmatic work that is eye-catching and pulls the spectator in for a closer examination. Picasso’s imagination and design within this work comes to light as we see the use of color, form, and silhouette manifest altogether in perfect harmony. For such an experimenter and innovator, this work has incredible balance. The equilibrium lies within the heavy usage of rich orange-red and black lines and shapes that guides the wandering eye. The verticality and depth of these piercing lines provide structure and form to the vase. The marks move with the structural forms of the vase, endowing the otherwise rather simple silhouette with a warm lively energy. From the front and now to the back of this brilliant piece, Picasso allows for easy maneuvering with the assistance of his ingenious design. The center space of the body is slightly curved in an oblong shape from the front and to the back—this is an interesting silhouette choice in that it provides incredible depth. This is further equipped with two slender handles that snake over the top portion of the spherical body. With the use of a simple color palette, skillful design, and strong silhouette, Picasso showcases a sophisticated and refined work of art.
