Historical Description

Truly captivating, the presence of Pablo Picasso ceramic Chouette (Wood-Owl), 1969  is substantiated by a fierce gaze sent from piercing eyes. Further adding to the character, ruffled feathers hint of an adventurous past. The shape of the ceramic makes the owl look proud, as if it is pushing out its chest. Painterly brush strokes are expressively strewn across the body that wonderfully accentuate the bulbous curves of the vase and denote a corporeal form. The mastery with which Picasso works with the form of the ceramic shows his true intelligence as a ceramicist. The neck of the vessel is the head of the owl, with the spout acting as the nose, and the lip as the brow lines. The body of the vase is the curved body of the owl, covered with feathers, layered with color and texture. The foot of the vase is the feet of the owl, which are also covered in the delicately rendered feathers. With a limited color palette, this stunning work lets Picasso's artistic handling shine through. The color palette is relatively lifelike, which only adds to the reality of this owl.

Created in 1969, this white earthenware clay turned vase with engobe decoration (brown, white) engraved by boring-rod under partial brushed glaze with black patina. Numbered from the edition of 500, this work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EDITION PICASSO' pottery stamps on the underside, along with the handwritten inscription'EDITION PICASSO MADOURA' in black.
