Highlighting a delectable charlotte cake, Picasso creates an abstract still life that conveys the comfort we feel while in our own home in Pablo Picasso Nature Morte (Still Life), c. 1960. Picasso presents before us a cake, plate, and glass upon a tablecloth. We almost feel as though Picasso is inviting us to partake in this delicious dessert. This magnificent piece perfectly combines Picasso's defined geometric forms with soft, swirling strokes. With great fluidity of line, Picasso defines each object within this still life. The sense of abstraction stems from the blocks of color that divide the composition. Dark and light grays juxtapose against periwinkle blues and muted browns, creating a sharp sense of contrast. Despite the slight disjuncture caused by these color variations, the composition as a whole retains a great sense of unity and balance. The white that dominates the center of the composition could be the result of light shining through a crack in the curtain, illuminating our still life. Of particular note is the patterned wallpaper to the left, which further contributes to the welcoming aura of this piece, as if Picasso is inviting us into his own home.
Created c. 1960, this original collotype with pochoir is hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881- Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin and signed in the stone in the upper right. This work is numbered from the edition of 350 in pencil in the lower left margin; published by Guy Spitzer with his blind stamp in the lower right of the image. The original oil on canvas Nature Morte à la Charlotte, 1924 is currently located in Centre Pompidou, Paris.
