Endlessly fascinated with the human face, Picasso created a range of ceramics that address this subject. Picasso presents this particular face in the form of an ice pitcher. Thick green lines delineate a mysterious face that could only have been created by Picasso, as large oval eyes gaze out from behind a long, rectangular nose. The mystifying subject appears straight faced, encouraging us to ponder what might be on his or her mind. Elegant blue and brown lines dance around this unusually shaped ceramic, hinting at the subject's hair. Picasso spares nothing in his attention to detail, as he decorates the two cylindrical shapes atop the circular base in black and blue stripes. Created in 1952, this white earthenware clay turned pitcher is decorated in oxides (green, blue, black) and knife engraved on white enamel. This piece is numbered from the edition of 50 and is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EDITION PICASSO' pottery stamps on the bottom; also inscribed ' Edition | Picasso| Madoura' in black ink on the bottom.
