Historical Description

Depicting a linear scene carved from the surface of a clay plaque, a man on a horse approaches from the right while three figures stand before him. The simplicity of the work exhibits Picasso's skill in creating a visual story with minimal manipulation of the earthenware clay. This striking work is reminiscent of a linocut in both technique and the total effect.

Created in 1968, this rectangular plaque of red earthenware clay, printed with engobe pad (black) is from the edition of 500. This work is stamped with the 'MADOURA PLEIN FEU' and 'EMPREINTE ORIGINALE DE PICASSO' pottery stamps on the reverse.
