Paul Jenkins Untitled, 1970-71 is a dramatic and energetic abstract composition that gives the relatively small canvas a fantastic magnitude. Controlled lines of color starting at the top left delve diagonally down where they become a sweep of intricate texture and sublime colors that are barely contained by the edges of the canvas. Jenkin’s magical ability to endow the seemingly simple medium of acrylic paint with a transcendent, organic life is on full display in this mesmerizing work. The tranquil, net-edged wash of blue at the left flows and blends beautifully with the rich swirls of dark reds and pure white. Splashes of yellow are just subtle enough to give the work the satisfying primary color palette without stealing attention from the gorgeous blues and reds, the textures of which rule the composition. The calm melting of hues in the blue shades combined with the swirling and dynamic blends of the reds give the work a wonderful visual richness, at times, exciting our eye and at times providing us with a soothing vista. This remarkable original painting encapsulates Jenkin’s mastery of the medium, as he gives it a force and complexity that is almost alchemic.
