Historical Description

Paul Jenkins Untitled grasps your immediate attention with bold, striking warm tones that spread across the page. A flurry of reds, yellows and oranges bleed into each other, creating a remarkable variation of color tone and hues. In the background, a light beige acts as a cast drop shadow, providing the illusion of depth in this abstract watercolor. A long, dark multi-colored growth emerges from the bottom of the page towards the top, drawing your eyes towards the center where it becomes the focal point. Mixing with the highly pigmented red, Jenkins uses the water to gently blend the red into a light layer of blue, melting the two together until a subtle purple has formed, creating a brief rift in the colors. Like a warm hug, the bright yellows, oranges, and reds mimic each other in shape as they stretch from the top left of the image to the center right hand side. Gestural forms are created throughout the work to elucidate composition and meaning in a speculative space.
