Paul Jenkins Untitled is a sublime horizontal scene of glowing oranges and dark blooming blues. Moving across the paper with an languid, organic flow, the richly-hued watercolor creates a composition that evokes a dreamy landscape. The edges of color are almost all soft and melting; only one line, going diagonally through the middle of the work is not blurred, drawing our eye not only with it’s fluid sharpness, but with the contrast between the dark color and the pristine whiteness of the untouched paper below. Jenkin’s magical ability to create a whole world out of abstract movements of color is here on full display; every mark on the paper is beautifully fluid yet masterfully controlled, making full use of the medium. The bright oranges, red, and yellows at the left interplay with the cool turquoise at the right, creating a meditative scene of fire and water. The work is full of energy and yet remains calms and soothing, like great powers of nature. And while the piece has the presence of sprawling landscapes and sublime oceans, it is also an unpretentiously abstract work, drawing our attention to the delicate movement of watercolor and the beauty of pigment. This remarkable original and unique work perfectly encapsulates the masterful genius of Paul Jenkins.
