Paul Jenkins Untitled, 1971 conveys a strong sense of movement through a bold central composition dominated by shades of yellow, purple and black. Surrounded by a white background, this central composition features a rocket-like shape appearing to blast out of the bottom edge of the paper, suggesting a symbolic study of the inner voyage of the human spirit. Fascinated by self-contemplation, Jenkins combines multilayered formations of transparent color to attain different perspectives of depth. The colors blend and ascend from a roiling combination of shades of purple and black through the bottom and middle of the cylindrical image to end in a pure translucent yellow point, suggesting a sense of spiritual enlightenment. Crisp and blurred edges alternate gracefully and construct a harmonic rhythm and movement made possibly by Jenkins’ unique technique of applying paint to the paper.
Created in 1971, this watercolor on paper is hand-signed and dated by Paul Jenkins (Kansas City 1923 – New York 2012) in ink on the reverse. This is a unique and original work.
