Keith Haring Free South Africa, 1985
Keith Haring’s Free South Africa series, created in 1985, is a group of three lithographs addressing apartheid and racial injustice in South Africa. Using stark black-and-white imagery, Haring transformed his instantly recognizable figures into a direct visual statement about oppression, inequality and resistance.
The three Free South Africa lithographs were produced in editions of 60. Their bold monochromatic compositions differ from many of Haring’s brightly colored prints, using simplified figures and dramatic contrasts to communicate an imbalance of power. The series demonstrates Haring’s ability to use his accessible visual language to address urgent political and social issues.
Created during the international anti-apartheid movement, Free South Africa occupies an important place within Haring’s socially engaged work of the 1980s.
