Historical Description

In this monumental Rembrandt The Descent from the Cross: Second Plate, 1633, Rembrandt depicts the momentous moment in which Christ's body is released from the cross. Rembrandt utilizes strong contrasts between light and dark, illuminating Christ in heavenly light that shines down from the upper right corner. The figures surrounding Christ gaze on in awe. Some appear frightened by the sight while others remain stern and unemotional. Figures in the foreground lay on the ground in mourning, shrouded in shadow. Christ himself appears tiny and lifeless, truly capturing the tragedy of this biblical moment.

This work is considered a Nowell-Usticke State IV (of V) impression; Biörklund's State V (of V); White and Boon's State V (of V). Signed and dated in the plate 'Rembrandt f. cum pryvl 1633.' This work is stated by Nowell-Usticke to be an uncommon work with approximately 125-225 known impressions (Usticke 12, B 81).
