Alex Katz Portraits, Ada, Flowers and Landscapes
Portraiture is central to Alex Katz's work, ranging from closely cropped faces and large-scale figure studies to portraits of friends, artists, dancers, and cultural figures. His wife and longtime muse Ada Katz is one of his most important recurring subjects, appearing throughout decades of paintings, prints, portfolios, woodcuts, screenprints, and sculptural editions.

Flowers and landscapes are also important subjects within Katz's printmaking. His flower compositions range from simplified bouquets and irises to large-scale screenprints and woodcuts, while his landscapes reduce trees, water, sky, and seasonal imagery to bold areas of color and form. Alex Katz Signatures, Editions and Catalogue References
Many original Alex Katz prints are hand-signed and numbered, although signature placement and edition structure vary by work. Editions may include regular numbered impressions as well as artist's proofs (AP), printer's proofs (PP), hors commerce proofs (HC), bon à tirer proofs (BAT), trial proofs, Roman-numeral editions, and other documented impressions.
The Alex Katz print catalogue raisonné is an important resource for identifying individual works and editions. Catalogue information can help confirm a print's title, date, medium, dimensions, edition structure, printer, publisher, and other identifying details.

How to Authenticate an Alex Katz Print
Authenticating an Alex Katz print begins with identifying the exact work and comparing it with documented specifications. Important details can include the medium, paper or support, image and sheet dimensions, signature, edition number or proof designation, printer, publisher, stamps or inscriptions, provenance, and catalogue reference.
A signature alone does not establish authenticity, and proof designations should correspond with the documented edition. Learn more in our guide to How to Authenticate an Alex Katz Print and our guide to Alex Katz Signatures, Edition Numbers and Proofs.
Alex Katz Print Values and Prices
The value of an Alex Katz print depends on the specific image and edition rather than the artist's name alone. Important factors can include subject, scale, medium, edition size, proof type, signature, condition, catalogue documentation, provenance, completeness of a portfolio, recent comparable sales, and current collector demand.
Major portraits, Ada images, flowers, complete portfolios, large-scale editions, and sculptural works can occupy very different areas of the market. For more information, see our Alex Katz Print Values & Prices guide and our overview of the Most Valuable Alex Katz Prints & Editions.
