Alex Katz Sunset 2, 2022 is a striking and surprising work from the renowned figurative artist. Katz, well-known for large-scale, amiable depictions of friends and family, boldly departs from his established style in this work. The woman portrayed seems to be split down the middle, each hemisphere rendered from a different vantage point; in this way, Katz appears to be inspired by the essence of cubism, but makes it all his own. The right side of the image features the soft blonde hair and shoulder of a woman in profile. The left side of the image depicts the face of the woman, hugely out of proportion to her body opposite her in the composition. She looks beyond the right shoulder of the viewer with an aloof expression, moving the viewer to ponder what is on her mind. The artist creates stark contrast between her fair skin and the deep shadows that surround her and obscure the upper portion of her face. The result is an remarkable, captivating image that invokes a sense of wonder in the viewer.
Created in 2022, this color woodcut on Hiromi Izumi 250 gsm paper is hand-signed by Alex Katz (Brooklyn, 1927 - ) in pencil in the lower right. Numbered from the edition of 75 in pencil in the lower right.
