Historical Description

Alex Katz Dancer 3, 1983, is an artistically bold work that highlights the fluid movement of dance in a set of 4 lithographs. By using flat areas of color, which are carefully painted to ensure an even and almost mechanical application, Katz places the viewer’s attention away from the work itself and instead focuses on the expressive moment of joy the character is displaying and the fluidity of her movements. Her arms in the air behind her, the joyful expression on her face that doesn’t pull complete focus, and her blonde hair following the movement of her body mid dance, show the exquisite skill Katz has in rendering his works, allowing the cool tone background to highlight the dancer. A lack of detail in the work’s background contributes to a nostalgic sentiment that carries throughout the work, allowing the woman’s figure to occupy the spotlight.

Created in 1983, Alex Katz Dancer 3, 1983 is a color lithograph on Arches wove paper hand-signed and numbered from the edition of 100 by Alex Katz (1927 – ) in pencil on the bottom left.
