Alex Katz Dancer 2, 1983, is an artistically bold work that highlights the fluid movement of dance in a set of 4 lithographs. By using flat areas of color, which are carefully painted to ensure an even and almost mechanical application, Katz places the viewer’s attention away from the work itself and instead to focus on the expressive moment of joy the character is displaying and the fluidity of her movements. Though she faces away from the viewer, we can still feel experience the gestures and movement she is making, allowing us to move beyond the work itself and focus on what Katz thought was important: feeling and understanding the fluidity of movement.
