Sam Francis Monotype Untitled, 1981 is a gorgeous masterpiece that acts as more of an explosion of an artistic experience. It births an incredibly aesthetic work of art that breathes movement in a tranquil and harmonious way. There are four rectangular shapes floating on each side creating a kind of balance to the entire artwork. These solid blocks are filled with richly dense colors of red, green, yellow, and blue. Francis’ vision and clarity for this piece exhibits a controlled chaos of geometric elements. Paint and ink splatters are then decorated all across the entire paper. Splotches of secondary colors such as pink, light blue, and orange are transmitted in great luminosity. In certain movements, you can see the precision and reflection of his wrist-work at play. Energy and tranquility is explored here where one can feel the contrasting sensations fuse together. This work draws you closer and closer as it invites you to explore its space and details. The cadence of emotions and artistic elements give way for an incredible pseudo-visceral experience for any viewer.
Created in 1984-85, this Unique Original Monotype with oil paint, dry pigment, and ink on handmade paper is hand signed by Sam Francis (San Mateo, 1923 - Santa Monica, 1994) in ink on verso.
