Historical Description

Sam Francis Untitled, 1978 is bursting with energy and full of color. Francis chaotically sprayed paint splatters over a crisscrossed structure that provides a solid base for all the color and energy in the composition. The color palette Francis chose for this work is full of beautifully contrasting hues. Rich magentas and purples cross over cool teals and blues, and small pops of yellows and oranges. These colors come together to create an exciting and captivating artwork that is full of the movement and motions of Francis’ artistic hand. Francis is known for his exploration of color and abstract expressionist style and this monotype is an excellent example of his artistic skill.

Created in 1978, Sam Francis Untitled is a unique monotype on handmade paper. This work is hand signed by Sam Francis and stamped by the Sam Francis Estate on verso.
