Historical Description

Sam Francis Untitled, 1985 is unique monotype with mixed media on paper, hand-signed by Sam Francis (San Mateo, 1923- Santa Monica, 1994) in pencil in the lower right. Inscribed in pencil along verso lower edge.

Sam Francis uses vibrant crimson tones, the composition seems to pulse with an internal rhythm - an energy balanced by Francis's masterful use of negative space. The central field of red expands outward in translucent veils and splatterd constellations, evoking both physical substance of the earth and the spiritual fire that animates it.

During the mid-1980s, Francis was deeply engaged with the expressive potential of color as a direct extension of consciousness. To him, painting was a means of translating emotion into light and form. In Untitled, the color embodies life, heat, and transformation. This chromatic intensity reflects his belief that color could operate as an independent language, capable of evoking the ineffable states of being that transcend rational thought.
