Sam Francis Untitled, 1990 is endowed with wonderful energy and depth which Francis creates so deftly thorough the use of vibrant colors and exciting, organic form. The energy of the piece is further augmented by its vertical orientation, which leads the viewer’s eye in an exciting upward motion. Bold pure colors cover the white background, ruled by a brilliant red streak running down the middle of the composition. The streak is flanked by a beautifully contrasting green, which interplays with bright yellow and deep blue drips and splatters. The layering of the various hues gives the piece a fascinating dimensionality, and one gets the sense of a viewing an entire complex world. There is in immense diversity of forms, ranging from quick thin ribbons to large blooming plumes of color. The variation of both shape and color makes the piece an enthralling visual feast, first drawing the viewer in with the exuberant eye-catching composition, then revealing a multi-layered and dynamic space that revels more and more the longer it’s viewed.
