Sam Francis, a prolific Californian artist, was known for several works that echoed the famed Abstract Expressionist movement during the mid-20th century. In this work, a painterly red border outlines a luminous white background. The two colors complement beautifully to create an eye catching and minimalist image. The symmetry of the sheet is subdued by the free forming red brush strokes which form its outline. Francis encourages us to find beauty in the imperfection as each side of the work is made subtly different by the red border.
Created in 1967, this unique original acrylic on paper is signed and dated ‘Sam Francis 1967' on the verso.
