Historical Description

Roy Lichtenstein Water Lily Pond with Reflections, 1992 from the Water Lilies Series is monumental in both scale and impact, showcasing the pop art hallmarks of this important American artist’s oeuvre. The viewer is immediately taken aback by the graphic prowess of this massive piece. Executed in a multitude of Lichtenstein’s iconic visuals: hard edges, flat color, and, of course, the Ben-Day Dots, the creator of this work is unmistakable. Lichtenstein reimagines the impressionism of Claude Monet’s famous waterlilies but his reference is clear. Like Monet, Lichtenstein was fascinated by reflections, exploring it in a number of his graphic works. In this artwork, as in the others from the Water Lilies Series, Lichtenstein, chose to screenprint on stainless steel, embracing the reflective properties of the industrial material. In a landscape composition, waterlilies are formed in black outlines with selective coloration in bright enamel paint. Utilizing processed and swirled stainless steel as his surface, Lichtenstein pushes his appropriation of commercial images beyond the purely visual. The very means of this creation are techniques typically used in mass production, now elevated as fine art.

Created in 1992, this screenprinted enamel on processed and swirled stainless steel, with painted wood artist’s frame is hand signed and dated ‘92 by Roy Lichtenstein (New York, 1923 – New York, 1997) in paint marker on verso in the lower right.
