In Roy Lichtenstein Nude Reading, from Nudes, 1994, a woman comfortably lounges in her home, reading a book while devoid of clothes; derived in Lichtenstein’s classical style of highly simplified color schemes and procedures that mimic commercial printing techniques, she is overlayed with blue and black halftone benday dots, small spattering’s of greens, reds, and yellows in the furniture items behind her. While Lichtenstein’s women from the 60’s were famously worried about their boyfriends, his nudes of the ‘90s depict women enjoying solitary pursuits, and the presence of other women. Eyes closed, she holds the book up in a way that obstructs half of her face, as if taking her time to enjoy this moment of solitude. She raises her hand to her head, a moment of intensive, profound thought passing the woman by. Thick, bold lines sweep through the room, taking the form of the couch, paintings, door frames. On her knees and chest is patterning made to resemble the stars and stripes of the American Flag, as if to comment that she is the quintessential ‘American Girl’.
