Historical Description

Roy Lichtenstein Nude, from the Brushstroke Figures Series, 1989 is a marvelous work that features Lichtenstein’s loose, freely Expressionistic brushstrokes combined with diagonal stripes that frame the composition. The ambiguity of the Expressionistic forms is directly juxtaposed with the dark red stripes that angle downwards to the left that segments both in a simple, modern style. Benday dots capture our attention at the top of the form, contrasting dots that clash with the background. Bursts of yellow, blue, reds and oranges seep through the page, with lighter pastel colors such as pink, beige, and silver help give the eye a break, through the overwhelming organized chaos. Within the high pigmented orange that dominates the center of the work is a transitional ombre effect that leads the color to slightly desaturate as the color flows upwards, as if to mimic the way ink might react with a live paint brush, gradually losing pigmentation the longer the brush is on the page. Lichtenstein allows a pause for air by leaving small bits of negative space open within the form, in the empty cavities left available. The white acts as a breath of air, allowing the breadth of his work to illustrate your imagination with abstract expressionist forms.

Roy Lichtenstein Brushstroke Figures: is a collection of prints created in 1989 by American Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein. In this series, Lichtenstein expands on his earlier brushstroke motif, combining abstract gesture with stylized human forms. Each print features dynamic compositions where sweeping brushstrokes become figures, merging motion, color, and line into a playful yet structured balance. Using his characteristic Ben Day dots, bold contours, and vivid color contrasts, Lichtenstein transforms the energy of painting into a controlled graphic language. The Brushstroke Figures Series captures his continuing exploration of art’s expressive potential within the boundaries of mechanical precision.
