Historical Description

Displaying the artist's sense of affection and understanding of beauty, Pablo Picasso Mother and Child, 1963 is constructed on the base composition of a contour line drawing. This elemental technique allows the viewer to focus upon both the graceful quality of line as well as the intimate scene portrayed. A sense of energy and vibrancy is added by the color and lines seen at the background of the image. As stated by Luis Carlos Rodrigo, "Daniel-Henry points out that "his 'subjects' are his loves. He never painted an object with which he didn't have an affectionate relationship - and certainly not only on aesthetic grounds" (pg. 1495).
