Historical Description

Illuminating a loving family in varied hues of orange, Chagall captures a tender moment between mother, father, and child. Entitled Orange Maternity, Chagall depicts this nurturing scene in warm, cheerful colors. To the right, a mother caresses her child while the father, towering slightly above her, leans forward in an embrace. The figures tilt their heads in towards each other, relaying the impression of quiet joy, comfort, and security. To the upper left, a bright red bird swoops down, as if sharing in the celebration over the birth of the child. The child itself remains faceless, standing out in hues of white that contrast sharply against the orange background.
Created c. 1949, this work is hand signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin and also signed in the stone in the lower right. According to Mourlot, the name of the engraver is not mentioned on this lithograph produced by Charles Sorlier under the Master's direction. A very limited number of proofs, from which this piece is an example, were signed but not numbered. This plate was used as the cover for the program of a charity show (Mourlot p. 190).
