Historical Description

Chagall was a dedicated family man. Whether it was Bella Rosenfeld his first love and wife, or Valentina Brodsky his last wife, Chagall immortalized them in his works, and this work of Valentina is no different. Looking on lovingly to the art work her partner Chagall is creating, his wife seems to support him with one of her hands around his side. The easel is in one hand, the brush in the other, making any other attempt at physical intimacy limited but she does not seem concerned as she is more interested in the canvas. On the canvas is a stunning bouquet the artist is working on which reflects the colors that his wife is wearing, symbolizing her influence on his creativity. With the bond between the two on full display, Chagall shares a truly intimate moment with the viewer.

Created in 1971, this original color lithograph is hand-signed by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887 - Saint-Paul, 1985) in pencil in the lower right margin. Numbered from the edition of 50 in pencil in the lower left margin, this work is printed on Arches wove paper.
