Historical Description

Full of rich textural tones and hues, this work displays the sensitive rendering of surreal imagery which evokes a sense of warmth and beauty. Appearing like a water color wash with layers of bright translucent colors, artist's highly developed skill and technique is evident in this work.

Created in 1969, this original color lithograph is printed on Arches wove paper by Mourlot, Paris. Published by Maeght, this work is signed by the artist in pencil in the lower right and numbered 25/50 in the lower left. A wonderful impression, the colors in this piece are bright and fresh.

Depicting a double faced portrait of two people combined into one, the viewer gains visual access to the artist's inner most thoughts. Possibly a portrait of Chagall and his wife, the two faces hover over an energetic and lively scene of Paris, with the Eiffel Tour visible in the distant horizon. A large bright bouquet of flowers emerges at the bottom of the image, as though offering us their beauty. Layered washes of bright blues, vivid greens, vibrant reds and pale peaches, give this work a dazzling appearance and capture the viewer's attention. Symbols found throughout Chagall's oeuvre appear at the edge of the image, a blue bird sits on the left and a red bird on the right. This work illustrates the artist's perpetual believe in the harmonious coexistence between man and nature.
