Historical Description

This lighthearted work exudes a sense of carefree fancy and fun. Two figures, an acrobat and a violinist, perform together in a circus arena. The acrobat contorts her body; pulling her leg all the way back and spreading her arms, she balances upon the neck of a smiling animal. Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887- Saint-Paul, 1985) captures the violinist in an instance when he appears to be throwing his violin in the air rather than playing it as a chicken rests upon his leg. Chagall utilizes a vibrant color palette of yellows, pinks, blues, and greens that contrast nicely against the delicate black lines used to convey this image. He creates an animated piece that relays a sense of circular motion; diagonal lines curve from the left to the right as another acrobatic figure soars over the violinist and female acrobat, the arc of his body perfectly following the curve of the circular arena. This delightful work depicts a colorful and fanciful duo as they entertain an audience of awed spectators, some of whom peek their faces in at the left, eagerly gazing out at the show.
Created in 1968, this piece is hand signed in pencil in the lower right by Marc Chagall (Vitebsk, 1887- Saint-Paul, 1985) and numbered 48/50 in pencil in the lower left (from edition of 50 examples in color).
