Keith Haring Fertility 2, 1983 is the second of five works in the artist’s Fertility Suite of 1983. In this work, the artist illustrates a speckled pyramid rendered in yellow, green and orange. This ancient structure which is historically a sacred monument is being attacked by two flying saucers in the top right and left corners of the work. In the bottom left corner of the piece, a pink and green pregnant figure stands with her arms thrown upwards toward the sky in astonishment, baffled by the scene that is taking place before her. Using screenprinting to construct this work, Haring maintains precise linework and bold saturated colors with acrylic ink. This work is an archetypal example of Pop art; Haring’s use of well-known iconography like ancient pyramids and UFOs appeals to the language of the masses while simultaneously communicating his thoughts on controversial topics such including violence, sex and religion.
