Historical Description

Frank Stella Limanora, from the Imaginary Places Series, 1994 is a fantastic dance of shapes, built upon each other to create a lively and saturated composition. Many of the forms came from previous print Series as well as discarded elements, here taking on new life. There is a rich variation of line, from the wormhole-like tubes suggested through quick thin spirals, to the playful white dots edging the green and blue circles at the bottom left, evocative of shells and bright pearls. An enthralling sense of movement flows through the work as each shape swirls, drops, curves, and shoots in its own direction. The narration achieved through abstraction is remarkable; Stella’s palette of printmaking skills, from etching to aquatint, is here on full display, culminating in a wonderous and magical experience of color and depth. The name of the work, taken from the Godfrey Sweven’s 1903 book “Limanora: The Island of Progress,” suggests a wonderous place beyond the limitations of our world. This eye-catching work gives the viewer a breathtaking view of the possibilities of that imaginary realm.
