Historical Description

Andy Warhol Shoes, 1980 FS II.257 is a beautifully crafted graphic print that highlights Warhol's artistic talent and his interest in American pop culture and society. The print is coated in diamond dust, which reminds the viewer of a starry night sky with the way it interacts with the work's inky black background. The way Warhol has presented the shoes themselves evokes the image of an x-ray, with flat blocks of color forming the shapes of the shoes. In choosing high heels as the shoes he wanted to portray, Warhol emphasizes his fascination with American commercialized fashion and culture. High heels became essential to the working woman's uniform in the 1980s and high heeled pumps were irreversibly tied to the image of a fashionable woman in America. This print features grays, blacks, and pops of bright blues and subdued reds, accented with the sparkly diamond dust. The color choices allow Warhol’s graphic work to shine through in this captivating work, and reminds the viewer even more of an x-ray.
