Andy Warhol Shoes, 1980 FS II.255 is a beautiful work capturing images of high heeled shoes from multiple angles. Warhol takes inspiration from a starry night sky, with sprinkles of diamond dust mimicking the stars. The work also reminds the viewer of an x-ray scan, with its dark black background, and two-dimensional coloring of the shoes. Warhol was fascinated by American pop culture, and especially by Hollywood stars like Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn. High heels are a commercialized fashion item that became essential for a women's wardrobe during the 1980s, especially women entering the workforce for the first time. This print features a more subdued color palette or white and black, accented with the sparkly diamond dust. The simple color choice allows Warhol’s graphic work to shine through in this captivating work.
