Historical Description

Andy Warhol Shoes, 1980 FS II.253 is an eye-catching composition of high-heeled women’s shoes, seen from various angles. The composition resembles both a night sky and a fabulous x-ray. Warhol sprinkles the surface of the prints with diamond dust which, combined with the black background, give the work a glittery, celestial energy that perfectly encapsulates Warhol’s artistic style. The graphic silhouette of the various heels, instantly recognizable despite the flat coloring, is reminiscent of an x-ray scan, adding an additional layer of wit to the visually verbose piece. High heels, an commodified object of fashion and a representation of American culture, are a natural choice of subject for Warhol, who was a master of subversively exploring mass media and pop culture imagery. In Shoes, Warhol simultaneously maintains the iconic shape of the heel and creates abstracted graphic shapes that connect with each other and form beautiful negative space. The fiery reds, oranges and pinks (coupled with the diamond dust) endow this print with a captivating charm, playing into the overall chic look of the work and embodying the cultural trends of the time.
