Whimsical shapes tilt and twirl about the composition in this playful work. Calder utilizes a bold color palette, filling his shapes with rich reds, blues, and yellows. The bold, black lines delineating these shapes provide a stark contrast to these vibrant colors, and the white background provides an even sharper distinction, causing the shapes to pop out at the viewer. The composition appears balanced, as if the figures, though different shapes and sizes, are strategically dispersed. The shapes stand alone as their own entities, yet when viewed in the context of the entire composition, the figures and forms begin to adopt new identities, toying with the viewer’s sight and imagination.
This work is hand signed by Alexander Calder (1898 – 1976) in pencil in the lower right and inscribed "H.C." (hors commerce) in pencil in the lower left; aside from the regular edition of 90.
