Historical Description

Renowned for the many muses that he had throughout his lifetime, Picasso's mistress Marié-Thérèse was notorious amongst them. She served as the inspiration for several of his works, including this particular lithograph. Picasso accents her extremely unique and personable features - prominent nose, full lips, and defined cheek bones. Though depicted in profile, she retains our gaze, as her sharp eyes glimmer through the golds and bronzes of the piece. Picasso's interesting technique can be noted further in the delicate waves of her hair, giving it an organic and fluid quality despite its solid and textured appearance. Though this is a lithograph, he draws her as if she has been chiseled from stone - the result is a timeless quality that speaks to her unending beauty and influence in the artistic and personal life of Picasso.

Created in 1958, this image was created for a poster designated for an exposition of Picasso's sculptures and drawings at the Maison de la Pensée Française, Paris. This work is an artist's proof aside from the edition of 150 without text (there was also a poster edition of 800 with text). This work is hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (1881 - 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin.
