Historical Description

Of his work, Vasarely has stated "I can no longer admit an inner world and another, an outer world, apart. The within and the without communicate by osmosis, or, one might rather say: the spatial-material universe, energetic living, feeling-thinking, forms a whole, indivisible…the languages of the spirit are but the super vibrations of the great physical nature."

Vasarely is a master at both color and design. Utilizing alternating patterns of squares and circles, Vasarely creates a magnificent optical work with a sense of geometric rhythm. The circles and squares in purple, red, blue, orange, yellow, and green combine to create a rather minimalist work. The shaped profile adds to this illusory effect, allowing the light to cast shadows across its edges and corners, breathing life into the sculpture as one views it from all sides.

Created in c. 1970, this original polymer resin with inlaid circles and squares over a wood block is hand signed by Victor Vasarely (1906 - 1997 in white ink in one of the purple circles near the base and numbered from the edition of 50 on a sticker affixed to the underside.
