Sam Francis Monotype in Acrylic Untitled, 1966 is a unique and original work which showcases the artist's skill with color, texture and space. Sam Francis is a prolific Californian artist who is known for his role in the Abstract Expressionist movement. His main influences include Zen Buddhism and Jungian Psychology. To that end, his artworks derive meaning from symbolism and subconscious exploration. This work is an excellent example of Francis’ oeuvre.

The paper is bordered with a mixture of light acrylic color. The artist's hand is incredibly obvious as these colors mix and mingle to create new colors. Looking even more closely, each ribbon of color contains different shading, some even creating a subtle ombré effect. Alongside the right of the image are also grey dots which are gently splattered throughout the paper. Francis is known for his frequent juxtaposition of color against a blank canvas. In this artwork, the two contrast beautifully to create a harmonious composition.

For Sam Francis, painting was always considered in terms of space and structure. He famously said "painting is about the beauty of space and the power of containment". When this philosophy is applied within the context of this artwork, viewers immediately notice how the dynamic colors are softly buttressed by the edges of the paper. Sam Francis preferred the monotype method as it produced the most painterly effect. As such, the texture of the brushstrokes appears smooth yet varied, contributing to the visual experience.

Created in 1966, Sam Francis Monotype in Acrylic Untitled, 1966 is a unique original monotype in acrylic on paper stamped with the Sam Francis (San Mateo, 1923- Santa Monica, 1994) estate stamp on the verso.
