Historical Description

Roy Lichtenstein Red Barn, 1969, C.89 is a pastoral landscape scene with a bright red barn and deep green rolling hills and trees. The composition uses a limited color palette of red, green, black, and white. Lichtenstein makes use of his famous Ben Day dots for the shadows in the work. The red contrasts nicely with the green of the trees and grass, and the artist's choice to use the white of the paper for the roofs of the barn structures makes the design pop. The cartoon-like envisioning of the landscape lends a modern feel to a traditional artistic subject. Lichtenstein reenvisioned the pastoral country life that was often romanticized in the 19th century in art, as a more modern composition in line with the Pop Art movement of the time.
