Historical Description

Roy Lichtenstein Haystack, 1969, C.84 is simple yet beautiful screenprint of a yellow haystack in the middle of a field. Most likely influenced by Claude Monet’s paintings of the same subject, Lichtenstein puts a modern spin on the composition by including his favored “Ben Day dots” that are used in comic book panels. Lichtenstein flattens the landscape with the opaque and minimal shadows and highlights the haystack as the focal point by not covering the bright yellow with the comic book dots that make up the background. This work is an excellent showing up Lichtenstein’s screenprint work and showcases how the artist combined traditional art with modern artistic techniques to create something unique and visually interesting.
