Framed in a bright yellow boarder, Roy Lichtenstein Reflections on Minerva, 1990 from Reflections, 1990 shows a distressed Minerva partially obscured by reflective lines. As if she is behind glass, the abstract red and black stripes dance across her face. This series was all about examining reflections, and often, like in other of Lichtenstein’s works, he would use his previous paintings and prints as inspiration. In the background of this artwork we see a typical Lichtenstein woman – benday dots and all. Rich colors are used across the work, from a deep blue to bright reds and oranges. Minerva holds her hand to her forehead and her mouth is open in disgust. Through the reflections we wonder what Minerva is seeing that we cannot. There is also a speech bubble above her head that is obscured both by the bounds of the artwork and the reflective lines. Lichtenstein teases context, but ultimately denies it to the viewer.
