Historical Description

Roy Lichtenstein Real Estate, 1969, C.88 is a long horizontal composition of a building. The print is done in a simple blue and white color palette which highlights Lichtenstein's use of line and shading. The design of the wide and flat building involves many tiny window panes which contrast nicely with the openness of the background sky. Lichtenstein made use of the Ben Day dots he was known for, utilizing them for shadows and the sky and ground. The work, despite being simple at first glance, is visually fascinating as the viewer's eye is drawn into the multitude of details.

"Lichtenstein also used this image on his own letterhead for a while, 'because if you write to enamel companies (with that on your letterhead) they will take you seriously' (Lichtenstein, in conversation with Fine, August 11, 1993),” writes Mary Corlett, author of The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein: A Catalogue Raisonne 1948-1997.
