Historical Description

Roy Lichtenstein Modern Head #2, 1970, C.92 is a balanced and bold geometric portrait of a face, reminiscent of etchings by Pablo Picasso. This lithograph is part of Lichtenstein’s Modern Head series, one of several abstract portraits of faces. The work captures Lichtenstein’s strong use of line to depict just enough visual information to signal to the viewer that we are looking at a face yet allows us to fill in the negative space with missing details. Lichtenstein creates a vivid and rich print with the limited color palette of just black, yellow, and white. The thin white lines create a delicate design and the pop of yellow provides a tantalizing contrast.
