Gracefully sitting atop a starch white bow tie, a violin takes on the identity of its player. Suzi Gablik states of the painting upon which this work was based:
What one sees in an object, then, according to Magritte's calculations, is another object hidden. In the case of the violin, for example, what was needed was a white tie and starched collar: A Little of the Bandits' Soul. The idea of a knot had been clairvoyantly implicit throughout. At intermediate stages in the development of the final idea, the violin appeared knotted into a girl's hair-bow, and intertwined with a snake, until finally the knot resolved itself as part of the bow tie on the starched collar of the violinist (Gablik, pg. 106).
This patinated bronze sculpture was created in 2010 after the original 1960 painting by René Magritte (Lessines, 1898 - Brussels, 1967) of the same title. This work is numbered from the edition of 150 and stamp signed 'Magritte.' Published by the Magritte Foundation and cast at Fonderie Paumelle, France, this piece is also stamp signed by the Magritte Foundation and Fonderie Paumelle, France.
