Looking quizzically out at the viewer, this curious grayish green-blue faune appears as a youthful and somewhat mischievous figure. He tilts his head and smiles slightly against a background of yellow. Picasso utilizes simple, abstract shapes to convey the faune, balancing an obscured four-cornered face atop a triangular neck. Picasso uses soothing, earthy tones of brown, yellow, and grayish green-blues that contribute to the impression that this faune could almost be a natural (not fantastical) creature. The depiction of the faune is found throughout Picasso's works, illustrating the artist's enthusiasm for mythical and wondrous creatures such as this one.
Created c. 1960, this original color offset lithograph is hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) in pencil in the lower right. An artist's proof, this work is annotated 'H.C' in pencil in the lower left.
