Historical Description

As part of an extremely rare edition from Pablo Picasso Bulls on a Branch series, this lithograph features several winged bulls against a backdrop of colorful flora and mystical scenery. This work is hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881-Mougins, 1973) in the upper left corner in black pencil and numbered VII' and dated '24.6.56' in the upper left corner. Also annotated 'H.C.' in pencil in the lower left (aside from the edition of 300).

During mid to late June of 1956, Picasso began experimenting with his "Branches" series in which he created numerous depictions of simplistic plants and flowers carrying a variety of creatures, including insects and bulls.

Picasso perhaps merged these two ideas together to create Taureaux sur une branche as he allowed his bulls to take flight in a weightless landscape, giving them wings to fly about in a seemingly fantastical and dreamlike world.

The bulls are strategically placed to create a balanced and harmonious composition in terms of both spatial arrangement and color as black is used to anchor the overall work. There are dark greens, yellows, pinks, and teals to accent and lighten the weighty bulls as they prepare their horns to charge.
