Historical Description

Sala Gaspar was founded by 1909 by Joan Gaspar Xalabarder in Barcelona. Originally intended as a frame shop, it eventually began exhibiting works from artists who were friends of Xalabarder. After the Spanish Civil War, the Gaspars befriended Pablo Picasso and organized the first Picasso exhibition in Spain. These exhibitions eventually included other prominent artists such as Joan Miró and became a major cultural and social hallmark of Barcelona.

This color lithograph, Sala Gaspar, Barcelona 1961, was created by Picasso to announce his upcoming exhibition. Playfully curved letters at the top announce the name of the gallery. The center of the work features a whimsical face, with blue colored eyes and checkered cheeks. Picasso has broken down the face into its most basic components - eyes, nose, and mouth, with blocks of color of the cheeks and yellow defining the nose. The colors are vibrant and bright, immediately drawing the eye. In every aspect, the image is emblematic of Picasso’s creative style. This work remains a reminder of Picasso’s influence on Barcelona and its cultural history.

Created in 1961, this color lithograph on wove paper is hand signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right. Inscribed ‘P.A.’ (artist’s proof) aside from the numbered edition of 50; published by Fernand Mourlot, Paris.
