Pablo Picasso La Ronde de la Jeunesse (The Youth Circle), 1961 exudes joy and harmony. Brightly colored figures in brilliant orange, yellow, and brown join hands and dance jubilantly around a central light blue dove carrying an olive branch. The dove, a well-known symbol of peace, is the reason for the coming together of so many figures in celebration. This lithograph was used on a postcard for the Eighth World Festival of Youth and Students for Peace and Friendship in Helsinki, Finland. It is no wonder, when looking at the unity of the figures, that this particular image was chosen for the event. The people dance around the dove, throwing their hands in the air and leaping around. These Picasso stick figures are rendered with incredible movement, and the viewer feels the rush of emotion that carries them through their dance of youth.
Created July 25th 1961, this exquisite color lithograph is hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 - Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right as well as signed in the plate in the lower right, and numbered from the edition of 350 in the lower left. Printed on Arches paper, this work is also signed and dated in the plate in blue in the lower right: ‘Picasso | 25.7.61’.
