Pablo Picasso La Ronde de la Jeunesse (The Youth Circle), 1961 exudes joy and harmony. Brightly colored figures in brilliant red, yellow, and brown join hands and dance jubilantly around a central light blue dove carrying an olive branch. The dove, a well-known symbol of peace, is the reason for the coming together of so many figures in celebration. Using crisp vibrant colors and the fluid use of line, Picasso creates a sense of optimistic energy that is focused around the dove of peace. This sense of hope is further heightened by the whimsical postures of the dancers seeming to float in the sky, suggesting that they dance more in the air than on the ground. This piece instills the viewer with the belief that the future is bright and full of hope and wonderment. This lithograph was used on a postcard for the Eighth World Festival of Youth and Students for Peace and Friendship in Helsinki, Finland. It is no wonder, when looking at the unity of the figures, that this particular image was chosen for the event. The people dance around the dove, throwing their hands in the air and leaping around. Picasso renders the simplistic bodies with incredible movement, and the viewer feels the rush of emotion that carries them through their dance.
