Historical Description

Pablo Picasso Lithograph Femme verte au chat (Green Woman with Cat), c. 1955-1958 is a typically Picasso portrait – depicted in a stunning green, the woman sits on a red chair, her body placed profile to us. As we look at her face, we see the dip of her chin and the point of her nose, only noticeable in profile, yet both eyes, nostrils, cheeks, and eyebrows are present. Picasso plays with perspective in the face of Femme verte to allow us to see all of her face at once. Other bold colors stand out in the collotype. The rich black wall allows for the woman to pop in all her glory. Femme verte au chat is a wonderful work full of exquisite coloration and details, and highlighting Picasso’s most interesting artistic techniques – that of exploring the dual perspectives of a human face.

Created circa 1955 to 1958, this color collotype was created after an original oil on canvas created by Picasso in August of 1937. This work is hand signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 - Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin and inscribed “epreuve d’essai” in pencil in the lower left margin; aside from the numbered edition of 100. The original oil on canvas belongs to the Dr. Henri Laugier Collection, Paris.
