Created to advertise the Congrès national du mouvement de la paix held in Issy-Les-Moulineaux, France in March 1962, this works displays a beautifully-drawn dove carrying an olive branch. Turning to the internationally-recognized symbol of peace for inspiration, Picasso proves his skill at capturing a big idea with a simple image. Shown in mid-flight with its wings outstretched, the artist's dove invokes the lofty goals of this conference held in the name of peace. Although it was created over 50 years ago, this image retains its impact, a key characteristic of an enduring artwork.
Exhibited March 10 - 11, 1962, this work was created using the image from an engraving entitled The Blue Dove, and bears the date of that work: December 28, 1961. Signed in blue in the plate at the lower right, this original color lithograph is also hand-signed in pencil by the artist in the lower right. The work is numbered 137/200 in pencil in the lower left and comes from the 'avant la lettre' edition. It is likely that this is one of the copies donated by Picasso to La Maison de la pensée française.
